I’m a Porcupine
I lay claim to the forests, grasslands, deserts and hillsides throughout the world.



I live in warm climates in Asia, Africa, Europe, North America and South America.



I am a rodent of significant size and I have needle like spikes known as quills as many as 30,000 that are sharp bristles of fused hair that hurt anyone who threatens me.



They are for my protection and allow for me to go on my merry way as I search for shelter and food.



No one messes with the porcupine unless they want to get spiked with my quills.



I rely on the bark of trees, twigs, plants, leaves, fruits and small insects for my diet.



I usually am active at night and sleep during the day.



I live a lonely life aside from my mate and our babies.



A group of porcupines usually a family of 5 or more is known as a prickle of porcupines.



Our babies, porcupettes are able to navigate life on their own at six months and are mature at 2 years of age.



Porcupines are intelligent in many ways and are good at solving puzzles and can navigate mazes very well.



They have excellent memories and use different sounds in communicating amongst each other.



A popular movie that portrayed a porcupine along with other animals that delighted kids of all ages is Sing which featured Buster Moon, the koala bear and show organizer; Gunther, the pig and lead singer; Meena, the shy elephant and reluctant singer who has a dream; Ash, the porcupine punk rocker who saves the day in addition to many other animals.



There are currently 30 species of porcupine and the porcupine can be traced back 30 million years ago.



Porcupines living in the wild have a life expectancy of between 10 and 15 years.



Porcupines who live in captivity in zoos and sanctuaries live to 20 years or more.



I advise any would be predators to stay clear of me in the wild because I have pointy spikes that are sharp and they come in handy for my protection.
