I’m a Frog

I live in all kinds of climates and terrains.

I can be found by lakes, streams, ponds, creeks, swamps, marshes and other waterways.

I also live in trees, jungles, rainforests, deserts and even on mountaintops.

Frogs can live in warm and cold climates.

In the cold winter, frogs will hibernate as their bodies will freeze but they are protected by their body chemistry. As they freeze they will stop breathing and their hearts will stop beating but they will revive themselves in the spring when it becomes warmer. They will be hungry and in search of food when they come out of their hibernation.

Frogs living in the desert depend on rainfall and burrow into the sand to protect themselves from the heat only coming out at night in search of food and water sources.

Frogs live on live insects, grasshoppers, worms, caterpillars, crickets, small rodents, pond fish, leaves and some fruits and vegetables.

Frogs catch their prey with their tongues outstretched like a spider catches its prey with its venom.

Frogs are generally small measuring 3 to 4 inches but there are some as small as a quarter inch and some as large as 12 inches or more.

The Goliath frog is the largest species and the Paedophryne amauensis is the smallest.

Frogs living in water also can live under the surface.

Frogs have natural body camouflage and usually are green in color.

Frogs have smoother skin than toads and are slippery and hard to catch because of their sliminess and leaping abilities.

Frogs can achieve a speed of 10 mph because of their ability to jump forward.

Frogs rest on lilly pads and are able to blend in protecting themselves from potential predators.

Children are amazed by frogs and can adopt one or more as a pet. They love to see them jump and listen to them as they communicate.

Frogs kept as pets need an adequately sized terrarium with a simulated environment that there’re used to in the wild with water, food and space to jump and move around especially if there are two or more.

Tree frogs make the best pets but you need to provide them a living experience that fosters an environment with sticks, branches, rocks, foliage and proper lining with regulated temperature.

Frogs call out for mating or if under threat.

Some species of frogs instinctively protect their young.

Frogs are solitary animals and usually live alone soon after they leave their protective parents care.

There are over 5,000 species of frogs in the world and they live everywhere except Antarctica.

Frogs can live up to 10 years in the wild and domesticated frogs can live longer if well taken care of. Tadpoles are threatened at birth as they are prey to many sea life.

Bullfrogs are common frogs and make wonderful pets too and are loved by children of all ages.

Children can learn a lot about frogs at the local library, in school, at animal conservatories, at aquariums, at museums and by waterways by just observing them.

Frogs are used in science labs to study and observe and that also means they are dissected even when they are alive and are put to sleep by chloroform.

Frogs are wonderful and interesting animals that need to be respected and protected in their natural habitat.
