I’m a seahorse


I’m a unique creature of the sea and I’m mysterious and an oddity to many and for that reason many study my life to understand how I live and why I’m different.



I’m a fish that stands upright in the ocean with a snout, long tail, hard exterior for my protection and excellent eyesight.



I have gills to breathe in the water with but I don’t have fins like other fish.



I float in the waters and am a solitary fish.



Seahorses are beautiful and majestic fish and do a ritual dance to meet their mates so they can entwine with each other.



The curiosity of seahorses is that females in the mating process deposit their eggs with their male counterparts who receive them and keep them protected in their pouches.



It’s the male seahorses who become pregnant and deliver the baby seahorses.



They’re the only form of life where males actually give birth to their babies.



The male seahorses have pouches similar to female kangaroos but their babies only spend 6 weeks in their pouches whereas joeys spend up to 2 years with their mother kangaroos in their pouches.



Once the baby seahorses are born they are on their own after only 6 weeks in their father’s pouch.



They must fend for themselves and only have less than 1 percent chance of survival in the sea.



To ensure their safety baby seahorses seek out coral reefs to hide from predators and to prevent being carried out by the ocean currents.



Baby seahorses also seek out other baby seahorses forming small groups for protection and for their search of food.



They cling together by joining their long tails as they embark on their journey for small crustaceans such as shrimp, crabs and krill for their survival.



They don’t have their parents to protect them so they must seek out other baby seahorses for protection from predators and for bonding with each other.



Baby seahorses are the size of a jelly bean and very cute in appearance.



Children are fascinated by seahorses and love to observe them in aquariums where they can watch them swim and see how they live.



There are approximately 47 species of seahorses and they can be traced back over 13 million years as evidenced by fossils found.



If a baby seahorse is lucky enough to survive infancy and grow to maturity they will be on their way to possibly living between a year and possibly 5 years.



If they live in aquariums they will have a longer life expectancy and will benefit from the many visitors who come to see them.



Seahorses are wonderful and amazing fish and they are quite intriguing which is why children just love them.



When I’m born from my father’s pouch and released to the sea I immediately search for other baby seahorses and coral reefs for my safety and protection because
