I’m a Grasshopper

Grasshoppers are very interesting and beautiful to see as they are a major part of nature’s landscape.

They’re as much a part of our world as ants and bees are and they lay claim to over 11, 000 different types of species.

They’re pretty small in size measuring about an inch or two and they also have the ability to jump and fly.

They live in warm climates and reside in grasslands, rainforests, marshes, pastures and swamps.

If you look close enough you might just find one in your backyard in the summer time.

They’re the insects responsible for the tears and holes in your plants in your beautifully manicured garden.

Grasshoppers live on vegetation, plants, grass, flowers and farmers crops.

When grasshoppers mate the female can deposit hundreds of eggs but she must find a safe place free from predators where those eggs will eventually hatch providing a new population of grasshoppers to roam around the following summer.

Grasshoppers are independent and once they’re hatched from their eggs they’re on their own.

They live solitary lives in search of food and an eventual mate in their migration and once again the lifecycle begins again once they find a mate.

When mating the male will sing in its own way to the female to win her affection or produce a scent.

Grasshoppers can fly at a speed of 8 mph in flight and that’s their best way to escape the dangers of potential predators.

Grasshoppers also naturally blend in comfortably in their surroundings as a form of camouflage based on their colors.

Children are fascinated by grasshoppers and sometimes even try to catch them in the garden but they’re way too fast.

When the summer comes and I burst on to the stage free from the egg deposited by my mother I enthusiastically navigate my new surroundings with curiosity and excitement because I’m a grasshopper.
