Rain-drenched road in a bleary night
Many miles to go before daylight
My eyes are heavy and I’m losin’ site
Of that endless centerline.

I catch myself with a sudden nod
I shake my head and I swear to God
And crank up the tunes on the old iPod
And the wipers are just keeping time.

At the edge of the dark I can barely see
A figure stands near a twisted tree
(Through the) rain, bright eyes looked at me
And it seemed a bit insane

Something told me this was mighty odd
And she slipped in out of the rain.

Sat behind the wheel as the headlights shone
On the wet, abandoned highway.

The clock on the dash just had to be wrong.
I couldn’t have sat here for all that long
But the sense of the loss was terribly strong
Was that hitch hiker heading my way?
