Upstate New York is a song in English
All good things must go
I tell the trees in late august
It’s only a matter of time
And then I look to the skyline
And make a wish upon a trail
Leading to better places
But for now I’m stuck
In the loop of seasons
Never quite reaching their peak
And so I love the snow
For when it cauterizes
The cracks in the drive
On my way to school
So temporary
Because if I stay
I’ll melt to a puddle
Freezing up when the cold comes
Unable to move
From this ring of torment
So I’ll do my best
To form some legs
And push myself
Back into the bed I made
You’re my only vice
A monument of trust
Crumbles before you
Will you understand that you’re the cause?
“Why is Sam so sad?”
You say with your chest
If it’s in his mind then you will never know
Until he holds a sheet with aerial font
Spells it out for you plain and simple
“I don’t belong here”
With upstate New York
Breathing down my neck
Every road I turn looks the same
Coniferous trees loom tall above me
Blacking out the sun
If I’m so scared then why can’t you be too?
It’s only right and it’s only fair
That you feel the way I do
Because I know you’re a believer
When you said you prayed
For me everyday
If that were true, I’d be immune
To all that you brought down on me
Walking up to school
With tears frozen down my face
Thinking, “is this how it’s supposed to be?”
And I couldn’t wait for the snow to fall again
To tame my open flame
And you know I’m not all here
Emotional to the touch
And I’ll get better
But first, I need to fall
So I’ll seal away everything that haunts me
Staring while I sleep
Never to be seen again
And then willingly go back
To how I was before
And with every memory that we shared
Tarnished by an ember you bore
And so I’ll feed it more oxygen
Never to be seen again
