I remember seeing you for the first time a few weeks ago
I walked into the small cafe you worked in
Got my drink
Went on my way
A couple weeks later same thing
Except this time was different
This time you left me a little note on my cup
Two words I never expected to read
It said
You're cute
With a little smiley face next to it
I didn't see it at first
I had already left
So I went back
I got my hopes up
I remember your face
So unassuming
The kind that gets lost in a crowd
The kind that you look at and forget ever seeing
But I remembered
I thought it meant something
I thought you meant something
I went back to the coffee shop and you weren't there
So I waited
I waited until you came out of the back and started working again
I hesitated at first
Thinking about what I would say to you
How do I approach this
I've never done this kind of thing before
After a few minutes I got over it and I went up to you still working
Over the machine
Standing on the tops of my toes I asked
Did you write this on my cup
Pointing to the message
Yes
You responded
With a kind smile
You went on
But
There was a but
Just that one word made my heart sink
Slowly
To the bottom of my stomach
And then two words I never expected to hear you say
I'm engaged

It's so funny to me now
Looking back on everything
Why write the message on the cup
Leaving me thinking about you and the small interaction we had
Maybe I need to stop getting my hopes up
It's the same every time
