Why do commas show up in the middle of a sentence?

The comma gives you a chance to pause, or take a breath. For example: Spot wants to sing, dance, and play the guitar.

Oh, I get it. After the words sing and dance, a comma is used to tell us to take a breath.

I'm a comma, baby, so I always come
In the middle of your words to help your sentence run

We're the word stoppers

Period
Or, exclamation
Or, a question mark
At the end to say you're done

Or I'll run on and on and on and on
But must not run too far

I'm Comma Kass
I make the sentence last
But I can't run on forever

Period.

I can separate three or more items on a list
Like I ate pears, grapes, plums and apples
Get the gist?
Or, I indicate a slight pause in what you say

Like man, I wore my best skirt, the blue one today.
