Stranded there an hour or two
Waiting on the Christmas flight

This brings to mind memories I recall well
Back in 1914 outside Neuve-Chapelle

Started out with Christmas songs
Huddled there around our fires
The singing rose it wasn’t long
‘Til someone ventured beyond the wire
Frozen there in a rifle sight
Until he raised a flag of white
For a few short hours the peace was found
So we laid our weapons down

And me singing songs at the mission
Prayers for Saint Peter and Paul
In No Man’s Land I saw a vision
This Christmas - will be the best one of all

Standing there as infantry
We traded coffee and cigarettes
I looked at him he looked at me
We both looked much the same and yet
Divided there on different sides
I might have killed him had not I
Paused to reload again
I’m the enemy you killed my friend

He vanished then into the night
But pressed a postcard in my hand
The runway gave a ghostly light
And I began to understand
The paper yellowed now with age
His words came tumbling from the page
When they said I’d be home by Christmas
I never thought that I’d miss you so much
