I met myself today
Sittin’ by a river when I heard me say
Water’s smoothed these ragged rocks and carved this shore
Like these rocks I’ve made things hard before

I had volunteered
I would be the front line and I’d persevere
Analyzed and fortified no thing was missed
I had a plan for everything but this

Rivers take their time
They flow they fall they rise

People and the places and the paths I took
Losses and the victories to celebrate

And then I built a fire
Which story or which memory should be retired
I never thought that letting go would be a gift
The dancing flames reminded me of this

Fires hypnotized
From the ashes rise
