How do I get out?

I tried a million things you wanted to achieve,
Stepped in and out of characters you wanted me to be.
You seemed to view me as your nonexistent future self,
Someone you dreamed to be but then you took a solid path.
I walked your solid roads and now I can’t forget
The empty space inside my heart when truth was your decree.
It seemed like I could never find the road to being me
Because your convoluted words would block my only trail.
I should have warned you that my heart was going through that pain.
