There Were Days in the Summer
There were days in the summer
When all the world was outdoors
Where we played until nightfall
And no one knew what time was for.
I can still smell the cut grass
Heavy with the morning dew.
I can still see Lake Michigan
Dreaming in a distant blue.
There were days in the summer
We hardly knew their number.
Either in rain or sun,
After the school days all were done.
Those days in the summer
We knew them without number,
As if they would continue on
Forever and forever.
We were unrealistic
To think the world would let us
Live our lives in the mystic
Light of that bright summertime.
When we first felt the chill wind
Blowing in our faces.
We all knew what was blowing in,
We all knew what replaces
All the days of the summer
All the days of the summer
We knew them without number,
As if they would continue on
Forever and forever.
Those days in the summer
Drifting into each other.
The moms and dads had better things to do than pay us bother.
