There's a woman down the street
She painted her front door red last week
She has lived there for a year but I can't recall her name
And I see her in the garden pulling weeds out in the summer
I don't know why she just sits there and sighs
Drinking her coffee and the morning sun with her eyes
I could sit here and cry about all I don't know but perhaps I'll feel the sonder instead
There's a man who watched me sing
He had a ragged face and weary eyes
And he said I saved a life before I bid goodbye
But I never got to know his name or how to make him smile
I don't know why he just sits there and sighs
Drinking in the sights and sounds with his ears and eyes
I could sit here and cry about all I don't know but perhaps I'll feel the sonder instead
There's a car going down the highway
And the man in front sings to his favorite song
But I cannot hear the words or tell just what it is
And as he speeds away I wish I'd heard the melody
I don't know why he just drives alone and sighs
Drinking in the music and smiling with his eyes

There's a baby by the river
And a mother too and four down by the bank
There are six cars at the light and ten more down the way
And there's bound to be a thousand more tomorrow the next day
I don't know why they just sit there and sigh
Drinking in the life on earth and people with their eyes
I could sit here and cry about all I don't know
