Named Hypatia
Daughter of the philosopher Theon
She surpassed all the philosophers of her own time
In mathematics, literature and science

She explained the principles of knowledge to her auditors
Many of whom traveled far to receive her instruction

The cultivation of her mind, self-possession, and manner
Which she achieved as a consequence
Of freeing herself from obedience
Appearing before assemblies of men and magistrates

And all men, on account of her extraordinary
Dignity and virtue
Admired her the more

Unfortunately
That is not the end to her story
Intolerance and fear
Put an end to her Hellenistic ways
And now she cries, all alone,
Holding her head in her hands

Lost all humanity in their eyes
What ignorance reaps is no surprise
Prideful crowd, euphoric horde
Take her down again

And all men, on account of her extraordinary
Dignity and virtue
Admire her no more
