Rode off to seek revenge for what
Some Zulu tribes had done

But down at Ethaleni
They were ambushed by surprise
And eight of their commandos
Were overwhelmed and died

Mortally wounded Piet Uys lay dying
With young Dirkie by his side
Who bravely fought a Zulu impi
But was killed by Asegais

Who shared his father's name
When the Brits in 1879
Fought Zulus once again

This warrior with his own young sons
And forty volunteers
At the Battle of Hlobane
Their defeat was most severe

Outnumbered as they tried retreating
Through the Devil's Pass to run
Piet Uys was killed when he returned to the battle
To help a straggling son
