Foi Villa-Lobos quem executou a primeira audição em terra brasileira da Missa em Si menor de Bach com seu orfeão de professores no Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro.
Parece ser no Sanctus que se faz presente a forte impressão que o movimento de mesmo nome desta célebre missa causou em Villa-Lobos. A sobreposição de quiálteras de três contra dois, o movimento constante e a ausência de pausas transmitem a agitação serena dos seres angelicais proclamando o santo, santo, santo. A fórmula de compasso alterna entre o quaternário composto, no sanctus e o quaternário simples, no hosanna. Paralelamente ao motivo da subdivisão ternária, ergue-se uma melodia sublime, em duínas, primeiramente entoada pelo Soprano, depois entregue ao Mezzo, que segundo o compositor é escrita intencionalmente no estilo lírico das músicas religiosas antigas e sentimentais do Brasil. No tom de Fá menor, a complexidade dessa parte se dá justamente em virtude dessa agitação constante e lenta. Esse movimento curto impressiona por uma densidade rítmica e melódica grandiosa, sugerindo adoração e deslumbramento reverente e sem fôlego.

SANCTUS
Villa-Lobos was the first to present Bach’s Mass in B minor in Brazil with his Teachers’ Chorus in the Municipal Theater in Rio de Janeiro.
It seems to us that the movement of the same name in this renowned mass makes itself present in Sanctus, such was the strong impression it left on Villa-Lobos. The superposition of triplets against two and the constant movement and absence of rests convey the serene agitation of angelic beings proclaiming holy, holy, holy. The time signature alternates between compound quadruple meter in the sanctus and simple quadruple meter in the hosanna section. Parallel to the ternary motif, rises a sublime melody in duplets, first sung by the sopranos, then handed over to the mezzos, which according to the composer, is written intentionally in the lyrical style of ancient and sentimental religious Brazilian songs. In the key of F minor, the complexity of this piece occurs precisely because of this constant and slow agitation. This short movement impresses us with its grand rhythmic and melodic density, suggesting reverent and breathless worship and wonder.
