I can't remember
How old I was
When the Steeler
First came to me
But I know that every time
he left
He left a bit of misery
And, as each year progressed And died
I felt my heart grow cold inside
Being young
I guess I never knew
Just what was happening to me
But somehow
My dreams disappeared
Disappeared for eternity
And I cried
As life began to change
Into something new and strange
The Steeler of Innocence
Crept into my room years ago
when I was only a boy
And he whispered of the things Little children should never know
And he killed my childhood joy
I can't remember how sad I was When the Steeler at last left me
But I know my eyes were open
Open to life's reality
And as each year passed
And I grew old
Imagination turned dead and cold
I will never forgive the Steeler For the things that happened to me
But now
He has come to my children
Children I thought could be free
And I cry as their dreams dissolve
With every secret of life they solve
And the Steeler of Innocence
Creeps into darkened rooms at night
Talking to each girl and boy
And he whispers of secrets
Each adult hides out of sight And he ends their childhood joy
But maybe
Someday
He won't come like before
And children will dwell
In fantasy once more
