It’s all been said before
I’ve used up every tired,
Worn-out metaphor
And though, for all I know,
This will be over soon
Still I try to write a song to sing to you

I couldn’t find the words,
And I ran out of chords
And anyways, I’m not sure
What I’m aiming for
Or maybe, yes, I am,
But though you want me to
I hesitate to write a song to sing to you

It’s not a lack of inspiration
‘Cause, no matter what I do
Every song I write these days
Resembles you
What if you didn’t like the
Feelings that I’ve set to rhyme?
I can’t bear the thought of scaring you

So I’ll keep writing old,
Familiar melodies
Overuse cliches
That you will never see
But for now, my stubborn mind
Continues to refuse
To pour my heart out in the song I meant to sing to you
