He used to come home so tired and he sat down at the table
He didn't talk about his day not because he wasn't able
He just wanted to hear about us and the things we had done
It took his mind off the worries hearing about our fun

His hands were so worn so tired and so dirty
But he still gave those hugs and kisses before bed at 8:30
Then he sat outside with mom and they enjoyed their night
And I wouldn't see him again until dinner the next night


I didn't understand it then but I understand it now
It took me having kids and I stopped asking how
Dad I understand
I just didn't, before I, became a man


On the weekends he would take us, down to the river to fish
He would help us bait the hooks and taught us to cast in
He would sat back and watch us, sometimes not even a bite
But it was all of those moments is why he kept up the fight

I learned so many lessons right there sitting on the bank
He had a way of saying things that really made us think
Even when I got frustrated all the fish were on the other side
He said Son those same fish are right here on our side
