In the beginning, when God started out As most everybody agrees
Among other things on the fifth day out He got the idea for trees.

Before he made people, but after the birds And after the fish in the seas
It’s all written down there in so many words After elephants, turkeys, and fleas

Then Adam is made and he starts giving names Hangin language on all that he sees
And humans have been at these thing-naming games Forever and on, if you please

From barely a shrub to a towering giant To saplings a-sway in the breeze
From twisted and ancient trees standing defiant To finely trimmed top-i-ar-ies

Trees in the valleys Trees on the plain
Trees on the coastline in sun, wind, and rain
Trees in the desert Trees in your lawn
Trees on the mountains The list goes on and on… on and on…

For some, they are home, and for others they’re food Some, in season, a reason to sneeze
Modern-day science leads us to conclude That without them we just couldn’t breath!

The importance of this ancient class on the earth Found in towers or tables or skis
Is beyond all the measure of human-style worth For our houses and bridges and tees.

Bearing needles or leaves, bearing fruits, bearing nuts They humble our prideful spe-cies
They we harvest to make comfy chairs for our butts. We should really be down on our knees

Thanking these wonders for sharing their shade And for sharing with birds and with bees
And thanks be to God for the wonder He made When He got the idea for trees!
